Galaxy Z Flip8 Upgrade from a Flip7: Worth It? 4 Real Changes

At the bottom of this post, a two-minute video explains it in an easy-to-follow way, with illustrations and side-by-side comparisons. Watch the video ▶

Is a Galaxy Z Flip8 upgrade from the Flip7 worth it? Only four things actually changed.

One, the weight. It went from 188g to 180g, 8g lighter. Two, the thickness. When open, it went from 6.5mm to 6.1mm, 0.4mm thinner.

The generational gap comes down to 0.4 mm thinner and 8 g lighter

Three, the chip. It varies by region. Units sold in the US moved from last year’s Exynos 2500 to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while Korea and some other markets get the Exynos 2600. Four, the battery material. It changed from lithium-ion to silicon-carbon, the first silicon-carbon battery in a Samsung phone.

The problem is how small each change is. 8g is roughly the weight of a quarter and a dime together, and 0.4mm is not a difference your hand will notice. Set the Flip8 next to a Flip7, and telling them apart is hard. The look barely changed either.

So what about the rest? The 6.9-inch main screen, the 4.1-inch cover screen, the 50MP wide-angle and 12MP ultra-wide cameras, the 4,300mAh battery, and 25W wired charging all carry over from the Flip7 unchanged. And yet the US launch price went up by $100.

So personally, if you are using a Flip7, I do not recommend a Galaxy Z Flip8 upgrade. The Flip7 is getting the same Android update as the Flip8, and it still has 6 years of software support ahead of it, so there is almost nothing to gain on the software side either.

On the other hand, if you are on a Flip6 or older, two generations of chip improvement and the larger cover screen add up to a difference you will notice. For more on the Galaxy Z Flip8, watch the full videos.

💡 FAQ

Q1. I’m using a Galaxy Z Flip7. Is the Galaxy Z Flip8 worth upgrading to?

The case for switching is thin this generation. The displays, cameras, battery capacity, and charging speeds are all the same, and what changes is 8g of weight, 0.4mm of thickness, and the chip. The Flip7 is getting the One UI 9 update with six years of support still ahead of it, so there’s almost nothing new to gain on the software side.

Q2. What changed from the Flip7 to the Flip8?

Weight (188g → 180g), unfolded thickness (6.5mm → 6.1mm), folded thickness (13.7mm → 13.1mm), chipset (Exynos 2500 → Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the US, Exynos 2600 in Korea and some other markets), battery chemistry (lithium-ion → silicon-carbon), back panel (glass → fiberglass-reinforced polymer), and OS (Android 16 / One UI 8 → Android 17 / One UI 9).

Q3. What carried over from the Flip7?

The 6.9-inch main display and 4.1-inch cover display, 50MP + 12MP rear cameras and 10MP front camera, 4,300mAh battery, 25W wired and 15W wireless charging, 12GB of memory, IP48, and the software support policy of 7 OS upgrades and 7 years of security patches.
