The talk started before the Flip8 was announced. Phone development usually begins about a year before launch, along with locking in the parts supply, and at the time, analysts noted that no Flip9 activity had surfaced.

Other points were raised too. The cover screen has reached a physical size limit, the battery and charging have stalled for years, and the market is drifting toward big-screen foldables.

After the Flip8 was announced, though, the news went the other way. In late July, GalaxyClub, a Dutch site that focuses on Samsung news, reported a development codename for the Flip9. In October, the tech site PhoneArena reported on next year’s expected Galaxy Z lineup, including a Flip9.

So was the Galaxy Z Flip8 discontinuation talk baseless? What the numbers show is this. According to SamMobile, a site that covers Samsung news, Flip and Fold sales once split about 70 to 30 in the Flip’s favor. By the previous generation, the Flip7 and the Fold7, that had narrowed to about 50-50.

For this eighth generation, pre-orders in Korea, Samsung’s home market, reached 1.44 million units for the three new Galaxy Z models, and about 70% were Fold models. So the Flip’s share, once about 70% of sales, came to about 30% of this generation’s pre-orders. The Flip is clearly no longer Samsung’s main foldable.

That said, the discontinuation talk and the Flip9 reports are all leaks and forecasts, not confirmed facts, and Samsung has neither confirmed nor denied any of it. For more on the Galaxy Z Flip8, watch the full videos.
