iPhone 18 Pro RAM Is Still 12GB, So Why Is It Better for AI Tasks?

At the bottom of this post, a one-minute video explains it in an easy-to-follow way, with illustrations and side-by-side comparisons. Watch the video ▶

The iPhone 18 Pro RAM is 12GB, the same as the iPhone 17 Pro. But it is now better suited for AI tasks. Why?

The answer is not the capacity. It is the read speed. On the new A20 Pro chip, memory bandwidth, the speed at which data is read from memory, is up 50% over the previous chip. And the Neural Engine, which handles the AI math, goes from 16 cores to 32.

Why does memory bandwidth matter for AI? AI models on the device spend most of their time reading values from memory, over and over. So the read speed, more than the capacity, decides how fast they run. This is the same reason HBM, the memory used in AI servers, gets so much attention. In a phone or in a server, AI performance depends more on read speed than on capacity.

But the actual gain will not be clear until the reviews are out. And this applies to AI running on the phone itself. It does not apply to services like ChatGPT or Gemini, which run on outside servers.

  • RAM 12GB (same as the iPhone 17 Pro)
  • Memory bandwidth up 50% (A20 Pro)
  • Neural Engine 16 cores to 32

💡 FAQ

Q1. Is the 12GB figure official?

No. Apple does not list RAM in its spec sheet. The 12GB figure was confirmed through developer tools, and it matches the previous generation.

Q2. How did memory bandwidth go up 50%?

Phone chips used to stack the memory on top of the processor. The A20 Pro moves the memory beside the processor instead, which shortens the path between them and opens a route for heat to escape. Memory bandwidth is up 50% over the A19 Pro.

Q3. Has the real-world gain been confirmed?

Not as of this writing in October 2026. No outlet has published its own measurements yet. The only numbers available are Geekbench 6 database entries (single-core 4,719, multi-core 12,677), and those are unverified, so the final verdict has to wait for reviews.
